Publica - Community Center
Bukit Jelutong (est. pop. 44,000) is an upscale suburb of Shah Alam, Malaysia. The suburb is a planned community, with an area of over 2,200 acres (8.9 km2) developed by Guthrie Property Holding Berhad (GPHB), a subsidiary company of Sime Darby. Due to the suburb's upscale status, the residential units in Bukit Jelutong are mostly low-density bungalows and duplex houses, as well as some terraced houses. Bukit Jelutong has many parks and open grass areas.
The community center is a multi-purpose space intended for the local community of Bukit Jeltun Shah Alam public. The community center is intended to serve up to 300 people of various ages groups engaging in communal activities. The slope of the site posed a challenge, as integration rather than imposition was the goal of the design. Any building can be placed on a conveniently bull-dozed lot, but true architecture melds into the landscape, almost as something always meant to be there.
The library opens up to the exterior, allowing natural light to flood the space. Multi-purpose space for many different activity types. The timber fence mimics the landscape of the site and its vegetation, while the infinity pool creates a vista when one arrives at the site. The ascending main entrance also follows the site contour. Classrooms open up to the interior’s pathway, allowing the children to feel integrated into the community sphere, as well as creating easy access to those spaces. These spaces include outdoor and indoor activities, which are divided into blocks.
